#Shanghai’s migrant workers are the foundation of #China’s #Economy, ferrying goods around the #City on their #Bicycle. But if these photos of them #Look impossible, that’s because they are. Their loads have been digitally increased as part of a photo #Art project on the chinese economy and #Global consumerism. French photographer #AlainDelorme, decided to focus on the #Individual in his series Totems—specifically, Shanghai’s migrants who carry the load of the fast-paced economy by hauling wares on their bikes and carts, like improvised trucks.
“It is above all a way to #Make people think about the consumer #Society
Compared to the typical #Symbols that stand in for China’s economic growth in photographs. These migrants are even more impressive, appearing “in the first place like a #Superhero but very quickly, we have the feeling that the objects they carry are about to swallow them up, they are overwhelmed by them … just like the #Consumer is.
Delorme alters the photos with #Photoshop to exaggerate the loads his subjects carry and heighten that sense of #MassConsumption. “To what extent can we #Play with #Reality to get the viewer to ask questions?” The works investigate globalization and consumerism. “But it is above all a way to make #People think about the consumer society we #Live in via the ‘#MadeInChina’ #Phenomenon and the objects produced in big quantities.
“We are the servants of all these objects that we #Desire and wish to own, prompted by #Advertising.” But what is the real cost?

1. Fold starched napkin into thirds to form a rectangle. (If you’re using a square napkin, you’ll need to fold in half, and then fold in half again to get a long rectangular #Shape.)
2. Crease in half to create a #Center line for reference; fold top corners down along this line.
3. Fold up from bottom corners along dotted #Lines.
4. Bring left and right edges #Together on center line.
5. Flip upside down and over. Turn up bottom #Point.
6. To fasten: Fold left and right corners back; tuck one corner into the #Pocket of the other. Pull out #Bunny #Ears first; open up base.
